### Life cycle of a hornet nest

European and Asian hornets start the same way, but their nests differ greatly in where they hang and how big they grow. The European hornet keeps to one nest in a dark cavity; the Asian hornet usually moves to a secondary nest high in the treetops, protected by the dense foliage.

![Hornet embryo nest: a small paper nest with only the queen inside](https://buzzterz.be/assets/photos/nest-embryo.webp)

#### Embryo nest

From March / mid-March ≈ tennis ball

Only the queen is present. The little nest is the size of a ping-pong to tennis ball and has only about 20 to 60 cells — the ideal moment to act without poison. At this stage the nests of the two species are almost impossible to tell apart.

Asian
: In a sheltered spot: a shed, attic, under a canopy or in a bird box.

European
: In a dark cavity: a hollow tree, cavity wall or attic.

![Primary hornet nest in a sheltered spot, with the entrance hole at the bottom](https://buzzterz.be/assets/photos/nest-primair.webp)

#### Primary nest

April – end of July ≈ futsal ball

Once the first workers are born, the nest grows to the size of a futsal ball. You can recognise it by the entrance hole at the bottom.

Asian
: Keeps growing in the same sheltered spot. In summer, the colony moves to a secondary nest in about 70% of cases.

European
: This remains its only nest of the season, in the same dark cavity. It stays limited to a few hundred to just over 1,000 cells.

![Large secondary hornet nest high in a tree, with the entrance hole on the side](https://buzzterz.be/assets/photos/nest-secundair.webp)

#### Secondary nest

August – end of November up to 1 m across

The mature nest usually hangs high in the trees, hidden by the foliage. It can gather up to 11 kg — some 100,000 insects — as food. The entrance hole is now on the side.

Asian
: High in a tree, often more than 10 metres up. Up to 1 m in size, with about 6,000 cells and 1,000 to 2,000 workers.

European
: Does not build a secondary nest.

## Frequently asked questions

### How quickly can Buzzterz remove a wasp or hornet nest?

Usually the same day or within 48 hours. Call-outs take place on weekdays from 4 pm to 8 pm, and at weekends and on public holidays from 12 noon to 6 pm.

### What if the nest comes back after treatment?

All our work carries a 7-day guarantee. If the nest does come back, we return free of charge.

### What products do you use to treat nests?

We use the same insecticide powder as the fire brigade. It is very effective, but can be harmful to the environment. Embryo nests are removed without poison.

### Is the product toxic?

For people and most warm-blooded animals the powder is not dangerous: the active ingredient specifically targets insects and other cold-blooded animals. Cats and aquatic animals such as fish are, however, particularly sensitive to it. So keep cats away from the treated nest and make sure the powder does not end up in a pond or stream.

### Do you also destroy bees or bumblebees?

No. Bees and bumblebees are protected and are only relocated. Relocating a bumblebee nest costs €50; collecting a bee swarm is free.

### How do I recognise an Asian hornet?

The Asian hornet is 2 to 3 cm long, with an orange head, a black thorax and black-and-yellow legs. This invasive alien species is always destroyed.

### Which municipalities does Buzzterz cover?

Balen, Beringen, Diest, Geel, Heusden-Zolder, Laakdal, Leopoldsburg, Lummen, Meerhout, Mol, Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, Tessenderlo-Ham and Westerlo.

### How do I order honey?
